GREETINGS! Hope everyone’s summer was relaxing and refreshing! I guess people’s schedules are back to normal as the kids are back to school and work routines have picked up where they left off before the summer break. At The Milton Salvation Army – Khi Community, we too are getting back into our fall semester routine, however there are some new additions and revisions. I will give you the run down on the programs and events after these fine messages… IN MAY, JUNE AND JULY... the food bank served 470 individuals. Of these individuals, 58 were single adults, and 112 were families. Also, of the families, 216 children were assisted through our food bank in these months. In addition to the standard non-perishable items the Salvation Army Food Bank has given clients various hygiene items. Also, clients have been receiving cleaning packs that contain Lysol products such as 4 in 1 cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, wipes, laundry soap, dishwashing detergent, Air Wick air fresheners and glass cleaner. Clients have received a variety of JM Sneiders prepackaged sandwiches over the summer. Also, many local farmers have donated their fresh produce throughout the summer months and will continue to donate well into the fall. As well, clients still receive donated Little Caesars pizza, and a bag or two of frozen Starbucks pastries. Wow, talk about a generous community that we live in. Thanks to all these businesses for making it that much more special for our clients!!! DID YOU KNOW ... that an application for zoning has taken place at the Pineland Farms location (the farm property in Hornby that was donated by James and Barbara Snow)? The zoning for application is for a potential home for adults needing special assistance. This property would house some of these adults full time, but also provide others with respite care by running day programming. This is an exciting opportunity that responds to a great need in our region, as there are long waiting lists for this type of assistance. INTERESTING THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED OVER THE PAST 3 MONTHS...Khi Community held its annual Summer Adventure Daycamp where we saw over 80 children attend this camp again this year over the two weeks that it was held. These children got to experience a high energy sport program, attended an artistically creative craft workshop, and were given sound and impactful biblical teaching while capping each week off with a much coveted, fun-filled, fantastically hyped carnival. This year’s carnival included some amazing games, a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon animals, blistering cold (and sour) slurpees, along with cotton candy made on-site to specific order. I can vouch that the cotton candy was great as it was unexpectedly shoved in my face (which included a little bit in my mouth). Thanks Jen Carter and Dan for that and all of our amazing volunteers who gave of their time in order to make 2008 Summer Adventure Daycamp another success! Core-Mark a local distributor in Milton has chosen us to be their recipient of their fresh JM Sneider sandwiches that cannot be sold due to the strict timelines from their retail outlets, along with other damaged dry good and perishable items. Some of these items include: Kellogg’s cereals and snacks, Lays chips, a variety of chocolate bars, Gatorade, canned juices, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled water, Mr. Noodles soups, along with some doughnuts, frozen meals, and pizza pops. What an awesome donation that supplements the standard products that are given to clients! Thanks Core-Mark and especially Chris Paton for initiating and facilitating this donation over the past few months!!! Eyon, Arden, Rebecca, Emily, Julia, Sophia, and Amelia hosted our annual summer community barbeque once again this year for 2008. The food was amazing, especially the steak and ribs…mmm…ribs …oops sorry for the digression. The bouncy castle along with the slurpee machine also made its comeback for its second season use. A great number of people came out including some families from the daycamp along with neighbors of Mattamy’s “Baverstock community”. Thanks to all for your set up, clean up, cooking and most of all wonderful hosting attitudes! Our own Khi Komodo Dragons Dragonboating team had a disappointing showing on the race times this 2008 year, but made up for it in comradery. Unfortunately, the Kelso lake excursion did not show favorable results this year on the timesheets. However, what it has done is spurred some on to committing themselves for a better showing next year. Hey who knows, maybe it’s the 2012 Olympics for these guys and gals. Ok, now back to reality…once again, many new friendships were forged while staying in shape by enduring many grueling Monday night practices. We have seen a large influx in our multicultural volunteers. Some of our newest cultures include: Romania, Poland, Mexico, Columbia, China, and Brazil. We are in desperate need of volunteers on Monday Wednesday and Friday’s, between 10 and 1pm, who speak these languages, as I am definitely not fluent in any of them. I am releasing a flare for assistance!!! Please, if you possess a passion for intercultural relations, and at the same time have a desire to help out your community, please join our team of amazing volunteers. Contact me by email or in person at the 100 Nipissing location, fill out one of our volunteer forms and we’ll sit down for an interview in order to answer all of your questions. NEW VOLUNTEERS ... join with me in welcoming our newest team members: Kayoko, Busaba, Christian, Liz, Maria, Susan, Diane, Loree, Sylvia, Shaila, Brittany, July, and Ben! Thank you for all your hard work that you have done already and will continue to do! We are currently looking at adding one driver for Mondays and/or Wednesdays and/or Fridays. We need both a criminal record check and a driver’s abstract for those who are interested. Pickups include our three donation pantry locations of Superstore, A&P, and Food Basics, Little Caesars along with three (and soon to be four) Starbucks locations. We are also in desperate need for Drop In volunteer supervisors. The ideal candidate would be available to work from 10-1 on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. One must be able to lift over 40 lbs, has a good knowledge of warehouse procedures or at the very least would be interested in being trained, be detail orientated, is a team player who works well with others, and has a heart for his or her community. Finally, we are looking to add new administrators to join our admin team. These candidates must be polite, patient, courteous, have outstanding telephone mannerisms, a heart for those who access our food bank and be willing to work at least one 3-hour shift once a week. Please contact me directly either by email or phone if you are interested. IMPORTANT DATES ... Monday September 22, 2008 is the start of our “Monday Volunteer Drop-In Nights”. or the office 905-875-1022. NEWS…our website has a new look and feel and has been updated too. Check us out @ www.khicommunity.com and stay informed on the latest and greatest things that are going on with the Milton Salvation Army – Khi Community. The Firefighter’s Food Drive will be changing the way it’s conducted as a solution to Milton’s growing population and the need to include all the new neighborhoods that have sprouted up. Therefore, instead of going driveway to driveway, which they cannot feasibly do anymore, the firefighters will be setting up strategic drop off zones that donors will be encouraged to take their donated items to. More information will be coming out once these areas have been determined. Stay tuned… IF I HAVE MISSED anyone and you know that they are also a volunteer and have an email address, or would simply like to receive these update emails, please let me know so that I can add them to our volunteer email list. Thanks.
Blessings! Rob HensonVolunteer Coordinator & Community Pastor 905-699-4620
