Acts - Great read in one sitting!

Earth hour – sat down with my flashlight in hand and decided to take the journey through Acts in one sitting.  Really makes much more sense than reading it piecemeal.  If you haven't done it, try it.

1. Reckless guys with a who cares about me attitude

2.  Who are these guys anyway?

3.  God the ultimate corraborator

4.  Other people prove our sincerity and intent

5.  Christianity - not for wimps

Biblical Eldership Article by Alexander Strauch

Trying a second time to blog...let's hope this works.

Didn't like this article.  The author tended to use parts of scriptures to support what he believed and didn't always include all of the details.  Also, he was very authorotative and didn't leave any room for considering other opinions.  It was his way or the highway.

I tried to see if listening to a podcast would be any different and besides a few really bad jokes it was the same material.  So, now I will put this article aside and try to find others.

Vintage Church
March 8 2009 My thoughts today come from reading the book Vintage Church by Mark Driscol and Gerry Breshears.   What is helpful about this book is that they define both the church and church leadership.  The writing is a little dry and tedious, but the thoughts are good and provoking.  Defining the church The first point of note in their book is that often we do not define the church making it difficult to know whether a group of people are authentically followers of Christ, or simply a gathering of friends and strangers into a pseudo community.  They give this definition, which I believe is an excellent description of the church:

Acts 1
Mar 8/09 Working through Acts today here's a few comments from my readings

Acts 1:14 - Qualities of Leaders/Relationships between leaders - "one accord, devoted to prayer" (probably the fact that they were in "one accord" has a lot to do with their constant prayerful submission to Christ.   What does this say about the ratio of "business style" meetings to "prayer meetings" involved in Christ centered leadership??

Acts 1:15 - Peter arises as the "first among equals".  There is a sense that while all the disciples share the same charge for leadership he becomes the "spokesman" by merit of his giftedness.  The leadership doesn't become hierarchical but there is a sense that his natural leadership gifts become respected and utilized by the group (as I would imagine the gifts of others were also utilized.)  There is mutual submission based on giftedness.

Acts 1:16 - Peter's role as leader involves the interpretation and enacting of scripture.

Acts 1:24 - the casting of lots for choosing the new leader highlights two things:  1) That they are committed to enacting/fulfilling scripture just for the sake of pure obediance. 2) That they have a profound trust in the Holy Spirit as the "lots" is a supernatural method of decision making.  They are avoiding making a "human decision".

QUESTIONS:  How do we lead in a way that is more supernaturally centered where we have to rely on the intervention of God for decisions.

CONVICTION:  Prayerlessness.  How do we learn to listen better to Christ.  Being more "stewards" and less "CEO's"?

This is our new blog that allows us to share things we discover as we actively research scriptures in order to find out what it means to have a "Christ centered" leadership model for our church.

Acts 6-10

Kinda cool as this is a historical mark for me - blogging for the first time!!!

Well after reading Acts ch 6 through 10 tonight, I was struck by the amount of times the Holy Spirit is mentioned.  First, did you know that a spiritual prerequisite for being a server is needed?  Oh yeah, you need waitresses and waiters to be "full of the Spirit and wisdom" (Acts 6:3).

Hey check this out, if you want to win a theological debate, and win it well, check out Acts 6:10.  Stephen argues against the Freedmen, Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria and the provinces of Cilicia and Asia because of the "wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke" (Acts 6:10).  It's obvious that new believers need to receive the Holy Spirit and they did (Acts 8:15-17), however, did you know that just because you've had a conversion experience, it doesn't necessarily mean you've received the Holy Spirit.  Check out the story of Saul/Paul.  He has a revelation of Christ on the road to Damascus but receives the Holy Spirit later when Ananias prays for him (Acts 9:17-18).  The Spirit also offers direction, check out Acts 10:19-20 when Peter is told by the Holy Spirit that there are 3 men are looking for him and to go with them without hesitation.  What a sad story if Peter: 1. was not in tune with the Holy Spirit, or 2. did not obey the Holy Spirit.  The gospel would not (at least from what the bible shows us) have gone out and became accessible for the Gentiles.

Trust me, this is good news for the majority of us!!!   In all this, my musings for these chapters are as follows:  The Holy Spirit's functions are

1. to lead us in any kingdom initiatives - even the ones we think are insignificant ones

2. to equip us with heavenly wisdom that trumps human wisdom

3. Offers direction for our lives.

My lesson learned:  We need to be in a constant awareness of the Holy Spirit's promptings through prayer, obedience, reading of the scripture, and quiet listening time.  When we hear from the Holy Spirit, our response should be one of obedience!
